Tesla Semi is exceeding range estimates, notes CHP in recent sighting

The Tesla Semi was recently spotted by officers of the California Highway Patrol in the Donner Pass area. Images of the vehicle taken by the CHP show the all-electric truck hauling several concrete blocks, as the vehicle continued its real-world testing in the lead-up to its initial production run. 

Fortunately, the Tesla Semi’s sighting this time around proved to be a bit more special, as the CHP-Donner Pass officers were able to speak with the upcoming truck’s driver, who was gracious enough to give some details about the vehicle. According to the Semi’s driver, the matte red all-electric truck is currently operating at approximately 75,000 pounds with its trailer and cargo. What’s particularly impressive is that the vehicle is reportedly meeting or exceeding its range estimates despite its heavy load. 

“Tesla is out testing the new electric truck tractor. The driver stated the concrete blocks are for testing purposes only. According to the driver the truck is operating at approximately 75,000 lbs and the truck is meeting or exceeding the range estimates. Electric trucks are definitely the future. We look forward to seeing more electric trucks on the road,” the group wrote. 

This is not the first time that the CHP shared images of Tesla’s upcoming all-electric truck. Last year, the silver Semi prototype, complete with a trailer full of cargo, was inspected by the CHP at the Donner Pass Inspection Center, which is located just off Interstate 80. The vehicle was met with notable excitement from the group, who noted in a Facebook post that “the future has arrived.” When asked about the inspection, a representative from the CHP-Donner Pass group stated that the Semi was “very easy to inspect” and the vehicle was “very clean.” No violations were found by the CHP during its inspection of the Semi then.

The Tesla Semi holds a lot of potential, particularly as it is a vehicle that can tap into the immensely lucrative trucking market. The Semi definitely has what it takes to cause a disruption in terms of raw specs, considering that the vehicle is equipped with four Model 3-derived electric motors and a range of up to 500 miles. Tesla has continued to make improvements to the Semi since its unveiling too, with Musk stating on Twitter that the vehicle’s range will likely be closer to 600 miles per charge

The Semi has attracted the attention of several notable businesses, particularly those which are looking for ways to actively reduce their carbon emissions footprint while cutting transportation and logistical costs at the same time. Among the Semi’s reservation holders are PepsiCo, Anheuser-Busch, J.B. Hunt, FedEx, and UPS in the United States, as well as Bee’ah in the United Arab Emirates. Production of the Semi was initially slated for 2019, though Tesla has adjusted this estimate to sometime in 2020.

Tesla Model 3 fever hits South Korea as crowds flock stores to see the ~$26.5k EV

The Tesla Model 3 fever appears to have hit South Korea. Just days after the electric car maker opened orders of the electric sedan, large crowds of enthusiasts and potential electric car buyers have started heading to South Korean Tesla stores to check out the disruptive vehicle. 

Images of long lines of people waiting to see the electric sedan were recently shared by South Korean Tesla community members. One of these depicted a crowd of interested people lining up outside a Tesla store to check out the vehicle. The scene in South Korea’s outlets invoke images of the Model 3’s earlier days, when the Model 3 was still only making its way across the US and in select international markets. 

A key reason behind South Korea’s notable interest in the Model 3 may lie in the vehicle’s price and its related subsidies from the local and national governments. Tesla lists the Model 3 Standard Range Plus with a starting price of 52 million won (about $43,000) for South Korea, but thanks to an EV subsidy of 9 million won (about $7,400) from the national government and up to 11 million won (about $9,100) from some select provincial governments, the electric sedan could start as low as 32 million won (around $26,500) for its base trim. 

This price will allow Tesla to tap into South Korea’s mainstream EV market, which, similar to other Asian countries such as China, is on the rise. Amidst competition from other compelling, affordable EVs from local manufacturers such as Hyundai and Kia, the Model 3 Standard Range Plus and its ~$26,500 adjusted starting price could prove to be a bang-for-the-buck way for EV buyers to get into the Tesla ecosystem

Tesla has been in South Korea since 2017, though the company’s previous vehicles, the Model S and Model X, were both positioned as premium electric cars that compete with high-priced luxury vehicles from veteran brands. The flagship sedan and SUV start at 111 million won (about $91,500) and 119 million won (around $98,000) before incentives in South Korea, which puts them out of reach for mainstream car buyers. Tesla seems intent on changing this with the Model 3. 

Tesla formally opened orders for the Model 3 in South Korea this Tuesday, and recent reports have suggested that vehicle deliveries will commence as early as the fourth quarter of 2019. Once delivered, Tesla Model 3 owners in the country, apart from being able to charge their vehicles from the comfort of their homes, will be able to charge their electric sedan using one of the 22 Superchargers and 172 Level 2 chargers that have been installed by the company to date.

Tesla Semi gets potential rival for short-range routes in Daimler’s eCascadia

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) recently announced that it has completed the first two units of Freightliner’s eCascadia battery-electric truck. The two vehicles are part of Freightliner’s Electric Innovation Fleet and constructed to evaluate the integration of all-electric trucks into large-scale fleet operations. 

The Freightliner eCascadia is built on the Cascadia platform, one of Daimler’s best-selling Class 8 heavy-duty trucks currently available on the market. The all-electric eCascadias were designed and hand-built by 55 engineers and technicians, who utilized 1.5 miles worth of electrical wiring and a quarter mile’s worth of high-voltage cables to help create a truck that boasts an 80,000-pound gross combined weight rating. 

The eCascadia is powered by a hefty 550 kWh battery, which gives the electric truck a range of 250 miles per charge, making the vehicle ideal for short-range routes. The two eCascadias are still part of Freightliner’s testing fleet, but the trucks are expected to see real-world use by Penske and NFI in the near future. More deliveries are expected to follow over the following months as well. 

Roger Nielsen, president and CEO of DTNA, is optimistic about the vehicles. “This milestone in electric is important as both today and tomorrow’s technology is progressing. Our purpose is resolute – we build for our customers. Our team is incredibly proud to be leading the way for the industry, but prouder still to be working with our customers in a process of co-creation to make real electric trucks for real work in the real world,” he said. 

The eCascadia’s 250-mile range will likely put the vehicle in direct competition with other all-electric trucks that are expected to enter the market. Among these is the Tesla Semi, which will come in variants that have 300 and 500 miles of range per charge. It should be noted that Tesla has expressed plans for a dedicated charging infrastructure for the Semi, which will allow its trucks to tackle routes beyond their rated range. Daimler, for its part, is yet to announce a comparable initiative, though it has noted that the eCascadia can be recharged to around 80% within 90 minutes for an extra 200 miles of range. 

Overall, the arrival of the eCascadia does provide some pressure to other upcoming all-electric trucks like the Tesla Semi. Daimler is a veteran in the trucking industry, after all, and it intends to start deliveries of the vehicle before Tesla’s all-electric trucks reach their first customers. Tesla, for its part, has two Semi prototypes undergoing real-world testing across the United States. Production of the vehicle was initially expected for 2019, though the company adjusted the truck’s target manufacturing date to 2020.
