Tesla’s Model S and Model X are nearly 90% less likely to be stolen in the United States

Tesla’s electric cars seem to be building a reputation as vehicles that thieves actively avoid. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, which recently published its list of vehicles that are most likely to get stolen in the United States, the Tesla Model S and Model X are almost 90% less likely to get stolen than the average car. 

Highway Loss Data Institute vice president Matt Moore stated that vehicle theft is a matter of opportunity and market value. This is among the reasons why this year, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, which has a price of around $64,000, topped the list of most-stolen vehicles in the market. Being premium electric cars, the Tesla Model S and Model X certainly meet the criteria of price, but the way they are used by their owners make them pretty tough to steal

Moore notes that when electric vehicles are not in use, they are usually parked in a garage, or at least close to their owners’ homes, so that they can be plugged in overnight. This practice is common among electric car owners, and it allows each car to leave every day with a “full tank” of power. “Vehicle theft is a crime of opportunity, and electric cars parked in locked garages where they are recharging certainly makes it harder for a thief,” he explained.

Tesla’s electric cars are also equipped with a suite of security features that are actively designed to prevent thefts. Among these are PIN to Drive, which requires a four-digit verification code that must be entered before a vehicle could be driven; Sentry Mode, which monitors a vehicle’s surroundings and engages a series of visual and audible alarms once a break-in is attempted; and Intrusion Sensors, an optional accessory that intermittently pulses ultrasonic waves throughout the cabin and triggers an alarm if the signal is disturbed.

Apart from these security features, data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Crime Information Center have shown that Teslas that actually do get stolen are usually recovered. Between 2011 and May 2018, the National Crime Information Center tracked 115 Tesla thefts, and among this number, an impressive 112 were recovered. An example of this could be seen in a remarkable story involving an attempted theft of a Model S that ended up being involved in a dramatic transatlantic theft and rescue. During the entire duration of the vehicle’s journey all the way to its retrieval, the Model S’ owner was able to monitor the car’s exact location through GPS. 

The HLDI notes that ultimately, how often a car or truck is stolen will impact how much owners of the vehicle will pay for auto insurance. Thus, vehicles like the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, for example, will likely carry a higher insurance premium, particularly when they are being driven in areas where the rate of auto thefts are high. This should bode well for owners of Tesla’s electric cars, as some insurance providers still quote high premiums for the company’s vehicles. 

Teslas and muscle cars aside, car thefts across the United States have been at a decline in recent years, with the National Insurance Crime Bureau reporting 773,139 vehicles being stolen in 2017, down 53% from 1991, when car thefts across the country peaked at 1.66 million vehicles.

Tesla launches clever marketing push in China ahead of local Model 3 production

As Gigafactory 3 nears completion, Tesla is running full speed in its efforts to promote the company and its electric cars to the greater Chinese area. Among the most recent ones is a special partnership with Star Alliance, one of the region’s largest and most prominent airlines group.

According to new material released by Tesla in China, it is working with the Star Alliance group for a promotion that gives the country’s electric car community an opportunity to win airfare tickets around the Pacific area, as well as 5-day test drives in the company’s vehicles. 

This recent marketing push would likely result in greater visibility for the electric car maker’s brand in China. Considering that the Star Alliance group includes prominent airlines such as United, ANA, Air China, and Lufthansa (to name a few), this promotion will allow Tesla to reach, and possibly even tap into, a large demographic of potential customers for the near future. 

These initiatives could result in notable benefits for Tesla, especially since Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai is poised to begin operations soon. Tesla has already opened pre-orders for its Made-in-China Model 3 at the end of May, stating that deliveries of the electric sedan will likely begin in 6-10 months. That translates to November 2019 to March 2020 for the first locally-produced Model 3 deliveries

Fortunately for those that placed reservations for Tesla’s Gigafactory 3-made Model 3, the wait for the vehicle might not be that long at all. So far, Gigafactory 3’s progress has been remarkable, with local media reports pointing to the possibility of trial Model 3 production runs starting as early as September. A substation at the southwest of Gigafactory 3’s general assembly building is also expected to go live in the same month. With this in mind, there seems to be a pretty good chance that initial Model 3 production could start sometime before November. 

Despite the usual negative narrative and misinformation surrounding the company, Tesla continues to develop a reputation for being a maker of some of the world’s finest premium electric cars. This results in Tesla’s vehicles garnering a lot of interest, as exhibited by the amount of traffic that overwhelmed Tesla China’s official website after pre-orders for the Gigafactory 3-made Model 3 was opened to the public last May. The influx of  visitors proved enough to crash Tesla China’s website, resulting in the electric car maker issuing an apology to its customers online and advising would-be Model 3 buyers to place their orders at a physical Tesla store instead.

Mysterious Hyundai Kona EV fire currently under investigation

Hyundai Canada has stated that it is actively investigating the case of a Kona Electric that recently exploded while it was parked at its owner’s home in Montreal. The mysterious, fiery incident resulted in a garage door getting ripped off its track and flying across the street. 

In an emailed statement to Automotive News Canada, Hyundai Canada spokesman Jean-François Taylor stated that the company has been in contact with the ill-fated vehicle’s owner. Taylor also noted that it is actively working with investigators to get to the bottom of the incident. 

“We have indeed been in contact with the customer. We are working with authorities and fire investigators in Montreal to understand the root cause of the incident, as this is not yet known. As is always the case, the safety of our customers is our first priority, and we will push to fully understand the issue as quickly as possible,” he said.

Amidst conflicting reports about whether the Kona Electric was plugged in and charging when Piero Cosentino, the vehicle’s owner, noticed smoke coming out of his garage, Gabrielle Fontaine-Giroux of the Montreal Fire Department noted that it is still far too early to come to conclusions about the event. 

“It is still too early to draw conclusions as to what may have caused the incident. The [department] is ensuring proper follow-up with electric vehicle experts,” Fontaine-Giroux said. 

Transport Canada, for its part, has stated that it will release more information about the investigation around Tuesday or Wednesday morning, at the latest. 

While electric car fires attract a notable amount of attention, they actually happen far less than gasoline or diesel fires. In Tesla’s second-quarter vehicle safety report, for example, the Silicon Valley-based company stated that there was around one Tesla vehicle fire for every 170 million miles traveled. 

In comparison, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the US Department of Transportation recorded one vehicle fire for every 19 million miles traveled. That makes them over eight times less likely to be involved in fires. Part of this is due to the vehicles’ simpler, more straightforward design, which foregoes an internal combustion engine and gas tank in favor of electric motors and batteries.
