Tesla Chair shares rare insights on how it’s like to oversee Elon Musk

While speaking at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Tesla’s Board Chair Robyn Denholm provided some rare insights about how it is like to work alongside an ambitious innovator like CEO Elon Musk.

Denholm rose as Tesla’s Chair of the Board following Elon Musk’s run-in with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) last year, which was triggered by the CEO’s announcement on Twitter that he was looking to take the electric car maker private at $420 per share. Musk eventually settled with the SEC, paying a fine and agreeing to step down from being the Chair of Tesla’s Board of Directors.

During her talk, Denholm explained that she does not expect normalcy at Tesla, especially considering that the company is being led forward by one of the most notable innovators in the industry today. Overall, the Tesla Chair stated that she actually enjoys working in the electric car maker.

“It’s a joy to be working in that environment. There are very few people in the world like Elon, and the world needs more of them. In this world, you can’t be a disruptor part of the time. You can either be a disruptor and innovator as an individual or not. I don’t expect normalcy in that environment whether it’s Elon or one of the other innovators I’ve worked with,” she said

While Denholm did not provide any specifics about her day-to-day tasks at Tesla, she maintained that the changes being ushered in by the company are becoming more and more evident. This, Denholm explained, was one of the joys of working at the electric car maker.

“You can see the progress. Nobody, 15 years ago, was thinking about electric vehicles or sustainable energy with batteries. Today, the fact that the rest of the industry is moving that way is phenomenal. That would not have happened without Elon,” she said.

DreamWorks Animation’s previous Chair, Mellody Hobson, noted that there is a certain dynamic that one can feel in a company that is run by founders such as Elon Musk. According to Hobson, founders tend to be unconventional and break rules as they go, but they also require to have people around them that are strong enough to challenge them as they see fit.

“Founders are rule-breakers, they’re not-conventional in their thinking. They tend to be extraordinarily open-minded but also very, very strong-willed. You have to stand up for yourself. They don’t want a bunch of ‘yes’ people around them. You have to be able to challenge them in your own way, but they’re also used to getting their own way,” she said.

Tesla Dashcam resolves accident between Model 3 and Motorcycle

A Tesla Model 3 owner credits his dashcam for helping him avoid legal trouble in regard to an accident with a motorcyclist earlier this year.

Tesla Motors Club member “rajetta” was involved in an accident where a motorcyclist collided with the rear-end of his Tesla Model 3 on a highway. Rajetta claims prosecutors and police officers recently dropped the case, including all criminal charges and possible fines after watching the video his Tesla Dashcam captured, perhaps saving him hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees and penalties according to his lawyer.

Rajetta states the motorcyclist had three witnesses to the accident who were traveling close by when the incident occurred. It is unclear if the eyewitnesses were friends of the motorcyclist or not. However, the three witnesses claimed Rajetta came into the motorcyclist’s lane without signaling. Unfortunately, Rajetta’s lawyer claimed it would be the motorcyclist’s word against his due to the witnesses, thus putting him at risk of litigation and associated legal fees.

The video captured by Rajetta’s Model 3 was initially uploaded to YouTube. However, he removed the video as legal proceedings were still underway. He updated the TMC community on how the case was going, and as of Sunday, October 20, the case was dropped by prosecutors who claimed the video proved the eyewitnesses would have no way of seeing the accident occur. One of the eyewitnesses had just entered the highway, and the probability of that person seeing the accident clearly was extremely slim, according to Rajetta.

Tesla’s Dashcam saved Rajetta an unknown amount of money. But judging by the incident, it could be assumed the amount would be somewhat significant. Rajetta would not only be responsible for repairing his Tesla, a notoriously pricey task in itself, but also for the damage to the motorcycle, as well as the motorcyclist’s health costs. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, but was not utilizing any other protective gear and was, in fact, wearing a short sleeve t-shirt. As the motorcyclist slid across the pavement of the highway, it is likely he was subjected to some sort of damage physically. However, Tesla Dashcam saved the day, and Rajetta knows it. “Tesla Dashcam is not perfect, but it is way better than aftermarket systems IMO in terms of practicality,” he said in response to questions from other members of TMC.

Tesla’s ‘Life with Model 3’ shows future owners the fun side of EV ownership

Tesla recently launched “Life with Model 3”, a portion of the company’s site where owners have the ability to share short clips of their favorite parts of owning the all-electric sedan. The unique page features the phrase “Filmed by Owners,” showing the joy and excitement Tesla drivers experience on a daily basis.

The site is integrated into Tesla’s main webpage and features an introduction comprised of numerous clips from Model 3 owners, where they could be seen enjoying their vehicles and its novel features and characteristics.

The numerous videos show owners in a number of different scenarios, whether it would be driving the car with a passenger who has yet to encounter the Tesla experience or short clips of what owners are packing in their vehicle’s frunk.

As you scroll down the page, there are options available for the viewer to pick the feature, duration of the trip, and how many people were involved in the making of the clip. There are multiple categories for the feature, including Autopilot, Design, Performance and Technology.

Trip options can be narrowed down from Daily, Roadtrip, and Weekend. Owner options are Solo, Couple and Family. This gives the viewer the opportunity to experience what it is like to own the Model 3 and can open up many possibilities of use for potential owners to explore.

At the very bottom of the page, Tesla has a form available for European citizens, allowing for the possibility to win a Model 3 for two weeks. This experience will allow potential buyers to win the experience of owning a Tesla Model 3 for a short period of time.

Tesla is confident with the idea of a short-term ownership experience that could eventually turn into a purchase down the line. The clips on “Life with Model 3” are enough to plant the seed of potential purchase in a viewer’s head, but the opportunity to drive a Tesla and use it for daily life for two weeks may guarantee the sale of a vehicle in the long run.

Tesla executives such as CEO Elon Musk and Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen have remarked that each vehicle manufactured by the electric car maker is an instrument of fun. From their performance to their novel Easter Eggs, this definitely does seem to be the case. And as could be seen in the clips found in the company’s “Life with Model 3” series, there are many memories that can be made in a Tesla too.
