Tesla shares rise with optimistic $35K Model 3 outlook, $450 price target, and ‘Buy’ rating from Canaccord

Tesla stock (NASDAQ:TSLA) received a notable vote of confidence this Monday, with investment firm Canaccord Genuity predicting a massive rally this year amidst the electric car maker’s efforts to close in on the production of the $35,000 Model 3. In its recent note, Canaccord upgraded TSLA from a hold to a buy rating. The company’s 12-month price target for the electric car maker was also raised from $330 to $450 per share, representing a 40% rally from TSLA’s closing price of $305.80 last Friday.

In a note to clients on Monday, Canaccord analyst Jed Dorsheimer stated that the Street appears to be underappreciating the increasing prevalence of electric vehicles on the auto market. The company also pointed out that it expects Tesla to run into fewer challenges this year.

“The EV penetration story is underappreciated by the Street. We see a more stable 2019 with far fewer concerns for investors in the company,” the Canaccord analyst wrote.

While the company’s skeptics viewed the recent price adjustments that Tesla rolled out to its vehicles as a point of criticism, Dorsheimer notes that the electric car maker’s decision to lower the cost of its cars is proof that the cost-cutting and right-sizing initiatives the company has undertaken are resulting in progress in its efforts to produce the $35,000 Model 3. The analyst also notes that Tesla’s financials are showing some degree of strength over the previous quarters.

“We view the recent string of price cuts as further proof that the cost-cutting and right-sizing that the company has undertaken are resulting in concrete movement towards the ultimate goal of an affordable $35,000 Model 3. With the strong operating cash flow generation of $1.23B and cash on the balance sheet of $3.7B, the liquidity concerns and convertible note repayment are no longer valid concerns in our view,” the analyst wrote.

Apart from an optimistic outlook on Tesla’s continuing Model 3 ramp and the company’s finances, Canaccord also noted that concerns around Tesla’s governance have been addressed by the addition of the company’s two new independent board members — Larry Ellison and Kathleen Wilson-Thompson — both of whom appear to be working well with CEO Elon Musk. Canaccord also mentioned Tesla’s Autopilot driver-assist system as a difference-maker in the self-driving field, considering the company’s lead over its competitors and the potential of autonomous driving as a whole in the future of transportation.

Amidst Canaccord’s upgrade, Tesla continues to pursue international deliveries for the Model 3. Over the past week, Tesla has begun deliveries in the European region, with Elon Musk even dropping by on the company’s Tilburg plant to deliver some vehicles himself. Tesla’s efforts to promote the Model 3 in China are also underway, with test drives ongoing in several key cities. Tesla’s determination in China was evident in an incident last week after a test drive Model 3 Performance unit crashed in Shenzen, China. Despite concerns that Shenzen might not have another test vehicle for a while due to the accident, Tesla was able to ship another Model 3 Performance to the city quickly, allowing it to restart its test drive program almost without a hitch.

So far, Canaccord’s updated ratings on Tesla appear to be received well by the company’s investors. As of writing, Tesla stock is trading up 3.47% on Monday’s open, trading at $316.49 per share.

Disclosure: I have no ownership in shares of TSLA and have no plans to initiate any positions within 72 hours.

Tesla goes ‘Back to the Future’ at 1.21 Gigawatts in latest Easter Egg for the mobile app

Tesla might have just released its coolest Easter Egg yet. As discovered by the Tesla community and confirmed by Teslarati this weekend, the electric car maker has released an Easter Egg on the Tesla mobile app consisting of several references to the Back to the Future franchise. The fun, hidden feature is accessible for Model 3, Model S, and Model X, owners, and is compatible with both iOS and Android devices.

Accessing Tesla’s Back to the Future Easter Egg on the mobile app requires some geek knowledge of the iconic, classic, sci-fi franchise. To access the Easter Egg, owners would need to tap the battery gauge on the Tesla mobile app. when the vehicle has 121 miles of range remaining. Once tapped, a message would appear onscreen featuring the first references to the Back to the Future franchise – “Ensure plutonium fuel is inserted into reactor chamber and press “Yes” to continue.”

Upon pressing “Yes,” a gray Model X named “Outatime” would be displayed on the Tesla mobile app. The battery icon, which will show 1.21 Gigawatts, will also be yellow with a toxic symbol on it — a reference to the plutonium-fueled nuclear reactor used in the original DeLorean time machine. It should be noted that 1.21 GW is the output of the time machine’s plutonium reactor (or the lightning strike in the first movie), and “Outatime” is the vanity plate of the DeLorean time machine.

In true Tesla form, these are but the tip of the iceberg, as more Back to the Future references are present. The location displayed on the Easter Egg, 1600 S Asuza Ave, Rowland Heights, CA, is the exact location of the fictional Twin Pines Mall, where Marty and Doc Brown meet at the beginning of the first firm. Schedule Service will also display an upcoming appointment on November 5, 1955 at 6:00 a.m. — the date where Marty, the franchise’s main character, started his one-week stay in 1955 after escaping in the DeLorean time machine in 1985.

Quite impressive in this new Back to the Future Easter Egg are the added details that references the iconic movie franchise. At the bottom of the mobile app’s screen, the vehicle will be listed as a Model X P88D, a clear reference to the 88 mph speed required for the DeLorean time machine to travel through time. The Version displayed on the app will also be listed as 1985.43, referencing the year where the original events of Back to the Future took place. Lastly, and perhaps most impressive, was the VIN SCEDT26T6BD005261 that is listed on the Easter Egg. A search for the VIN reveals it to be a DeLorean DMC12, the exact same car used in the movie.

With a ton of Back to the Future references, Tesla’s latest Easter Egg is most probably its geekiest yet. The added hidden factor, highlighted by its activation at 121 miles, makes it even cooler.

Tesla Model 3 test drives in Shenzhen paused after customer crashes first unit

Tesla set out to remove the perception that electric cars are slow, boring vehicles which are no more special than glorified golf carts. The company accomplished their goal with the original Tesla Roadster, the Model S, Model X, and now, the Model 3. While Tesla’s electric cars are proven to be quick on their feet, there is one particular fact that usually gets overlooked — it takes a responsible and proficient driver to handle the power provided by the company’s vehicles.

This point was highlighted recently in Shenzen, China. Tesla is expected to begin deliveries of the Model 3 in the Asian country, and to help prepare reservation holders and potential customers for the sedan’s arrival; the electric car maker has started a test drive program for the vehicle. Just as planned by Elon Musk for the United States, the test drive units that were initially sent to China were Model 3 Performance, the top tier variant of the electric sedan that is known for being very quick, whether in straight-line acceleration or around a track. Unfortunately, one test driver in Shenzen, China proved to be unprepared for the power of the Model 3 Performance.

As shared by Tesla owner-enthusiast JayinShanghai on Twitter, the Model 3 test driver ended up crashing the electric sedan. An image of the vehicle, as well as a short clip of the electric car after the accident, showed the extensive damage to the front of the car. While Tesla has not revealed the specifics of the incident, the damage incurred by the Model 3 Performance suggests that the vehicle might have crashed into a pole.

Due to the crash, Model 3 test drives in Shenzen were promptly stopped, at least until another test unit could be shipped to the area. Fortunately, the wait for another Model 3 test drive car was short. As shared by  Tesla enthusiast Kelvin Yang on Twitter, reports have emerged stating that another Model 3 Performance has been shipped to Shenzen as a replacement for the crashed test drive unit. Unlike the red sedan that was damaged from the incident, Shenzen’s new Model 3 Performance test drive car is painted black and equipped with 19″ Power Sports Wheels.

Seemingly without missing a beat, Tesla has reportedly started taking appointments for test drives in the new vehicle. In a later update, Yang noted that the new Model 3 test drive car is already fully booked, with interested customers being required to wait an average of more than two hours for their turn.

Tesla’s rapid response to its damaged Model 3 test drive unit in Shenzen is impressive. Considering that deliveries in the country are yet to begin, the company showed a considerable amount of proficiency with its logistics by shipping another test drive unit to the city immediately following the first vehicle’s crash. This, if any, bodes well for the upcoming Model 3 deliveries in the region.

Unlike the Tesla Model S P100D and the Model X P100D, the Model 3 Performance is not equipped with a dedicated feature that optimizes it for straight-line acceleration. Instead, the Model 3’s top variant utilizes the raw power of its dual electric motors, which produce a combined 450 hp and 471 lb-ft of torque. The Model 3 Performance lives up to its moniker, with its 0-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds, its top speed of 155 mph, and its range of 310 miles per charge. The car is also equipped with a Track Mode feature, which optimizes the vehicle for intensive driving around a racetrack.
