Rivian adopts well-known Tesla strategy in R2 to combat range loss


Rivian is adopting a well-known strategy for its new R2 platform that Tesla uses in vehicles to combat range loss: a heat pump.

A few years back, Tesla managed to develop the heat pump for its EVs, which essentially used heat produced by the car and funneled it back into the cabin. Some have described it as an air conditioner in reverse.

Tesla traditionally used resistance heating systems in its vehicles, and while they were considered effective, they had drawbacks. One of them was that range was significantly affected when the vehicles were driven in cold weather.

This was until the heat pump came along and demonstrated that range loss could be combatted and reduced.

Now, it appears Rivian will adopt the same strategy for its new R2 platform, as the company unveiled the vehicle for the first time last week.

CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed on X today that the R2 would feature the heat pump, something that was not utilized in the R1T, which was a relatively surprising move considering its proven effectiveness.

Rivian’s new platform in the R2 will be more affordable than its previous R1 and will also equip a plethora of new features. However, the heat pump could be one of the most significant contributors to the vehicle’s improvement compared to the R1T and R1S. Range degradation is one of the more controversial topics in the electric vehicle space, and companies need to do more to fight losing mileage to cold weather.

The R2 is expected to start deliveries in 2026, and with the vehicle expected to make waves as a mass market EV and Rivian’s first of the kind, it could help the automaker secure a more stable financial situation and lead to the long-term establishment of a mainstay in an evergrowing sector.

This petition urges the NHTSA to stop calling OTA updates ‘recalls’


One Tesla shareholder has launched a new petition encouraging the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to change the language surrounding safety recalls that are fixed with an over-the-air (OTA) software update.

On Tuesday, Sawyer Merritt announced on X that he has launched a petition to urge the NHTSA to stop classifying OTA software updates as recalls and to end the use of paper recall notices—which are often sent months after an issue is fixed with an OTA update.

Merritt says he has discussed the problems with Tesla, adding that the company is also working on the issues.

“We urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to modernize and simplify its vehicle recall practices,” Merritt writes in the petition. “As vehicles continue to get more technologically advanced, these common sense changes will help improve vehicle safety and consumer awareness.”

In the past, many media outlets have reported on the “major safety recalls” affecting Tesla’s vehicles when they were simply fixed with an OTA update, rather than needing to be brought in for repairs. As one recent example, many publications recently blasted Tesla over an NHTSA safety recall affecting 2.2 million vehicles, although it simply required the automaker to make a font size bigger for its brake, park and antilock brake systems.

Not unlike with a smartphone, these kinds of issues are often fixed overnight in an OTA software update, though NHTSA letters for the widespread font recall weren’t mailed out until about two months later.

In a response to the petition, and to questions about considering a digital alternative in addition to or instead of paper recall letters, an NHTSA spokesperson told us the following:

“Defects that pose an unreasonable risk to safety are serious and should be remedied as soon as possible. Federal law requires manufacturers to issue recalls to remedy safety defects and noncompliances and issue notices to vehicle owners via first class mail.

“On background, a recall notification is an important acknowledgment of a safety defect or noncompliance with a safety regulation, regardless of the manner of the repair. The consumer needs to know of over-the-air remedies in case of an issue downloading the repair or if the safety defect or noncompliance persists due to an inadequate remedy.

“Unlike a software update to a computer or phone, a safety defect in a vehicle can put the lives of vehicle occupants and others on the road at risk.”

At the initial time of writing, Merritt’s petition is up to 1,483 signatures, just over an hour after it was launched. Tesla has not responded to Teslarati’s request for comment on the petition as of publishing.

“Manufacturers are required to initiate a recall for any repair, including a software update, that remedies an unreasonable risk to safety,” an NHTSA spokesperson told Teslarati in an email in January.

“NHTSA recalls can include any required repair, which includes a software update, to remedy a potential safety risk. Manufacturers are also required to submit any communications to owners, dealers, and others about any software updates that address a defect, whether it is safety related or not.”

Tesla Giga Berlin-Brandenburg gets its power back sooner than expected


The power supply for Tesla Giga Berlin-Brandenburg has been restored. The restoration of the Grünheide-based Model Y factory’s power came about a week after a suspected arson attack at a power pylon. The attack was claimed by the “Vulcan Group,” an anti-Tesla entity. 

The alleged arson did not just take out Giga Berlin’s power. It also caused power outages in thousands of households across several districts. Due to the attack, some facilities in the Freienbrink industrial area were forced to stop their operations. Hospitals and medical operations in the area were also adversely affected. 

But while the attack did stop Giga Berlin, it would appear that the repairs were completed faster than initial estimates from both Tesla and the local grid operator, E.DIS. In a comment to BZ, E.DIS noted that the power to Giga Berlin was restored Monday evening. “The supply has since been restored,” the energy supplier noted. 

Tesla reportedly confirmed Giga Berlin’s power shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday. “The first lights are on. The power supply has been restored. We are now checking and then slowly switching on,” the electric vehicle maker reportedly noted. 

Tesla Giga Berlin-Brandenburg Manufacturing Senior Director Andre Thierig shared the milestone on LinkedIn. As per the executive, Tesla is now working hard to resume the facility’s operations. And while it may take some time before Giga Berlin-Brandenburg is fully back to business, the facility has taken a big step forward by getting its power back. 

“The power supply to the Gigafactory has been restored for a few minutes now. The measures to restart production are now running at full speed under all safety precautions. It will certainly take some time before we have fully resumed production, but the most important step has been taken! Power ON. Many thanks to E.DIS for the quick restart and to all those involved and especially our employees for their support over the last few days,” Thierig wrote in a LinkedIn post.

“After a weekend of intensive work around the clock and numerous crucial repairs – on what is now probably Germany’s best-known construction site – extensive high-voltage measurements lasting several hours took place today in high-voltage measurements took place today in Steinfurt near Freienbrink.

“Certified test engineers spent a total of 4 hours testing the interaction of all high-voltage components on the construction site near Steinfurt in a very complex procedure under high voltage – and thus under real conditions. The key feature of the test procedure is the generation of a voltage level directly on the construction site – and at a level that exceeds the actual operating voltage of 110,000 volts.

“The necessary voltage was generated by a so-called resonance generator, which was delivered to the construction site by articulated lorry. To the great delight of the E.DIS grid experts, who had been working flat out for almost a week, the test engineers gave the green light. And that means: Tesla and Edeka’s GVZ are supplied again. A milestone on the way to complete repair of the damaged 110 kv pylon,” Montebaur wrote.
