  • How to pull off the perfect lap around the Nürburgring

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is one of the world’s most challenging racetracks but, because it’s also technically a public toll road, it’s also one of the easiest to get access to. If you’re planning a trip to the ‘Ring, you won’t find a more comprehensive guide than this video.

Over a run time of nearly three hours, driving coach Scott Mansell (no relation to Formula One champion Nigel Mansell), and Nürburgring 24 Hours winner Adam Christo break down the track in excruciating detail. There’s plenty of in-car footage, and timestamps for specific corners and sections—right down to pit entry.

Learning a new track always requires a detailed breakdown of things like the correct line and braking points, but with the Nordschleife, there’s a lot more information to take in. The circuit is 12.9 miles long, with dozens of corners. The official total is 73, but other sources claims there are up to 100.

Real-world conditions can also impact a lap. On a circuit this long, weather conditions can vary from one spot to another. Traffic is another consideration. A smattering of cars lapping at different speeds (with drivers of varying skill levels) will be on track at any given time.

Your results may vary, but the quickest drivers can lap the ‘Ring in well under 10 minutes. The current overall lap record of 5:19.55 was set in 2018 by racing driver Timo Bernhard in the Porsche 919 Evo, a modified version of the automaker’s Le Mans-winning race car. The current lap record for production cars is 6:44.97, set by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ in 2018.

If you want to experience the ‘Ring without getting behind the wheel, it’s also possible to hitch a ride in a “taxi” with a professional driver. Jaguar has been providing vehicles for this service for the past few years, including the XE SV Project 8 sedan and I-Pace EV.

  • MAZDA RX-7 BATHURST TYPE R DRIVEN

We get behind the wheel of the uber-rare Mazda RX-7 Bathurst Type R thanks to Mazda UK to see how the modern classic Japanese icon fares today.

The Maxda RX-7 Bathurst Type R is a formidable machine. Built as a last run special to celebrate its victories at Australia’s Bathurst circuit, the RX-7 Type R had its power boosted to 276bhp to bring it in line with the Gentleman’s Agreement that the Japanese manufacturers worked towards, while removing some of the weight. The result was the fastest Mazda RX-7 to date and one that combined brilliant 50/50 weight balance front to rear with the turbocharged 13b rotary engine.

With a production run of just 500 cars, the Mazda RX-7 Bathurst Type R is one of the rarest cars across Mazda’s history and we wanted to know whether the special edition could hold up today. With prices rising over £20,000 for regular, clean FD3 RX-7s, this example with a price tag of probably double that of the regular car still undercuts that of the Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R for example. With that in mind, should you buy a Mazda RX-7? We find out.

It is worth noting that this car is modified; it features a carbon fibre air intake, titanium exhaust, WedsSport Wheels and Toda Fightex suspension.

  • 1000HP TOYOTA SUPRA VS 850HP LS7 VW PASSAT

Hoonigan’s This v That series pitches some interesting cars against each other and this video is no different. Watch this 1000hp Toyota Supra take on an 850hp LS7-powered VW Passat. Who’s your money on?

This v That is all about pitching weird and wonderful cars against each other in a straight up drag race. Normally, if someone was to say what would win in a drag race, a Toyota Supra or a VW Passat, your money would be going straight on the Supra. But this time around that VW Passat isn’t exactly your regular taxi. No, instead this is powered by a naturally-aspirated LS7 motor developing a whopping 850hp and a 4-speed dog box.

The Supra, on the other hand, is of course tuned. This one retains the 6-speed manual gearbox, but features a 1000hp engine build for good measure. Getting such a powerful, manual, RWD car off the line isn’t exactly easy, and with some tough gear changes too, struggles to contend with the Passat.

Furthermore, there’s an added bonus in the video as both parties agree to a 50mph roll race in order to remove any benefit of traction off the line. So, who’s your money on? The 1000hp Toyota Supra or the 850hp LS7-powered VW Passat?
