    Time Attack – Round 3
Pirelli European Drift Championship – Round 3
    Modified Live Summer Special
    Brands Hatch – 27th June 2010

Round three of Time Attack takes place this Sunday, when this hugely popular form of motorsport pays its annual visit to Brands Hatch. Addition to the spectacular track action, the day also features a round of the Pirelli European Drift Championship and the Modified Live Show – plus a host of other attractions and demonstrations planned during the day.

Utilising the ‘Indy’ circuit, Time Attack’s visit to Brands Hatch last year proved highly successful, with good weather and large crowds that were treated to an exciting day of motorsport. And, with the forecast promising another dry and sunny weekend, organisers are confident that this year’s event will prove to be even more popular.

Both Time Attack and the Pirelli European Drift Championship have only seen one winner so far this season: Gareth Lloyd scoring outright wins in rounds one and two of Time Attack at Oulton Park and Knockhill, with Mark Luney doing similar in the EDC. They therefore not only go to Brands Hatch as clear championship leaders, but with targets on their backs – a scenario that is guaranteed to generate some serious competition.

After the gates open at 9.30, the action starts at 10.00 with practice for the Drift cars on the left-hander of Surtees, followed by the right-hander of Clearways. The Time Attack warm-up sessions for the Club Challenge, Club Pro and Pro Classes get underway half-hour later, with the 900bhp+ cars in the Pro-Class expected to lap at speeds far exceeding those of the Touring Cars.

Part one of the Drift Championship takes place at midday, which is immediately followed by Time Attack practice and qualifying sessions. Part two of the Drifting take place at 16.00, with the Time Attack finals held from 16.50 onwards.

In-between times, there are series of on-track demonstrations, the most impressive of which is destined to be the appearance of the two awesome Sumo Power GT team’s Nissan GT-Rs, which are competing in this year’s FIA GT1 World Championship. These 600bhp Super-cars will be driven by two of the team’s four drivers: Warren Hughes and Jamie Campbell-Walter, with demonstration laps scheduled to take place at 11.30 and 15.30.

There will also be a great deal to see ‘off-track’, with the Modified Live Summer Special show attracting a variety of exhibitors from all over the country. These include: tuning companies, component manufacturers, accessory and parts retailers, car clubs and static displays featuring some exceptional cars. There are even big-screen TVs located in bars and restaurants around the circuit for those who want to watch the footie!

Admission tickets are available on the gate, priced at £20.00 per adult.

  • Records Tumble Once Again at Main Event!

Santa Pod Raceway, the home of European Drag racing proved yet again to be the venue of choice for discerning race fans and petrol heads, as no less than 3 records were smashed during last weekend’s ‘Main Event’ – including 2 World Records!

Anticipation was high prior to the event, thanks a simply eclectic list of talent and machinery that promised great things from the outset. With last year’s event seeing records broken and then re-broken before the ink had chance to dry on the timing slips, the capacity crowd were looking to the ‘Who’s Who’ entry list, including top US ¼ mile star Melanie Troxel, to provide them with similar thrills this year.

Despite the weather being less than helpful on the Saturday, they didn’t go home disappointed, with John Bradshaw kicking things off by setting a new world record for the quickest Skyline in the World!! His hugely impressive slip 7.4513/187.41 with a textbook reaction time of just 0.0022 seconds will be very hard for anyone to beat. Jap fans will be delighted to know that John and his charging Nissan will be wowing the crowds, along with hundreds of other Eastern gems at the Japshow, at Santa Pod on the 4th of July. ‘Well, that was five years of hard work condensed into a little over 7 seconds of glory!’ laughed John. ‘We owe it all to our sponsors, Abbey Motorsport, Nissan UK, Motul oil, Gizzmo and AET Turbos. The strip was superb and really helped us to get a fantastic launch. We’re delighted, as you can imagine!’

Two wheel aficionados got their ticket money’s worth thanks to a storming World record run from Frenchman Eric Teboul’s Rocket Bike. Setting the World’s best ET for a bike – at a mind numbing 5.2321/249.02, it was as scary to watch as it was impressive!

Melanie Troxel’s competitive day at the FIA Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway was short, but she put on a superb show for the fans.

After losing in the first round of eliminations, Troxel returned for an exhibition run where her R2B2 Racing Camaro ran the fastest Pro Mod pass in European drag racing history — a stunning 5.937 at 242.42 mph. Aside from the historic speed, her elapsed time was just the second five-second run on European soil.

Finally, to top it all off, Urs Erbacher kept Top Fuel honours high, with a new European speed record of 314.87 mph!

Commenting on the weekend, Santa Pod General Manager, David Lloyd-Jones said ‘We’re delighted that it’s been yet another weekend of superb racing. It’s good news for the sport and even better news for the fans when history gets re-written like this. The Main Event is getting quite a reputation as a record-breaking round, so here’s hoping that the drivers and riders can keep pushing the envelope throughout the season and into next year. It’s testament to our superb Marshalls and track crew that our strip surface allows this kind of action with such regularity.’

  • Ultra-Fast American lady to take on 28 European Men at Santa Pod Raceway

Twenty-eight of Europe’s fastest motor racing men were all set to contest a blistering Bank Holiday battle-royal amongst themselves.

Then an ultra-fast, ultra-chic American lady jetted in to challenge them all.

Drag racing, the world’s fastest motorsport, is one of very few sports in which women compete directly with men, and Melanie Troxel is a blue-chip American drag racing superstar.

The 28 gents are Europe’s elite Pro Modified drag racers preparing to compete in The Main Event (28-31 May) at Santa Pod Raceway, near Wellingborough, the opening round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship. None will have expected the last-minute arrival of a major team flying in from America.

    Melanie Troxel

The elegant Ms. Troxel, 38, grew up in the sport, the daughter of a well-known racer, and has carved her own career as one of the world’s most accomplished female racing drivers, winning major races in three separate NHRA classes.

In 45 years, only 14 drivers have won NHRA national events in both Top Fuel and Funny Car categories; Ms. Troxel is the only woman among them.

At the wheel of a Top Fuel Dragster in 2005, she hit a career-best speed of over 332 miles per hour. Her successes earned her election as the Women’s Sports Foundation’s 2006 Sportswoman Of The Year, a distinction shared with past winners such as Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and golf’s Annika Sörenstam.

Last year she turned her hand to driving Pro Modifieds for team owner Roger Burgess, the founder and proprietor of one of America’s largest private healthcare corporations.

    DRAG RACING

A drag race is an acceleration contest between two vehicles from a standing start over a measured quarter-mile. After qualifying against the clock, competitors are paired in a series of head-to-head, instant-knockout matches. The winner of each match advances to the next round; the loser is eliminated. The process continues until a single winner remains (think of Wimbledon tennis – quarter-finals, semi-finals, final, etc.). Vehicles are highly developed for this purpose and include the fastest racing cars on Earth. Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars routinely exceed 300mph.

    NHRA

America’s National Hot Rod Association was founded in 1951 as the organised sport of drag racing began to emerge out of efforts to transfer illegal, ‘hot rod’ racing activities away from public roads to safer, legal confines such as disused wartime airfields. NHRA’s first national drag racing championship was held in 1955.

Today it is a huge organisation, licensing tens of thousands of racers and hundreds of tracks across the USA and Canada. The 23 ‘national events’ it currently conducts each year are considered the most prestigious drag racing series in the world, the sport’s equivalent to Formula 1 Grands Prix.

    PRO MOD

Pro Modified is a spectacular drag racing class that has become highly popular in recent years, having originated in America in the 1980s and come to Europe soon after.

Pro Mods are pure-bred racing machines bearing a (slender) outward resemblance to road-going cars. Colourful, composite-material bodyshells cloak racing chassis and hugely powerful engines. Body styles range from the 1930s to the present day. Pro Mods can cover the quarter-mile in 6 seconds at over 230mph. Last year Sweden’s Mats Eriksson hit 5.988sec/241.59mph, the quickest and fastest yet achieved on European soil.

Earlier this month, another Swedish Pro Mod racer, Michael Gullqvist, created drag racing history as the first European driver to win an NHRA national event in America. In a previous race in Florida, Gullqvist had clocked astonishing performance figures of 5.82sec and 248.84mph in his US-based team car owned by Roger Burgess.

Ominously for Melanie Troxel’s opponents this weekend, this is the car now airfreighted to England for her to drive at Santa Pod.

    FIA EUROPEAN DRAG RACING CHAMPIONSHIP

Europe’s international drag racing series is sanctioned by the FIA, world motorsport’s official governing body. The European season begins with The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway, near Wellingborough, over Spring Bank Holiday weekend. Pro Mod is one of five FIA classes in competition and is also the designated class of the MSA British Drag Racing Championship. MSA Round 2 is contested concurrently with FIA Round 1.

With 29 Pro Mod entrants, qualifying will be a brutal business. Four sessions against the clock will select the quickest 16 for Bank Holiday Monday’s head-to-head, instant-knockout eliminations. Thirteen will pack for home on Sunday night.

The FIA Main Event takes place over Spring Bank Holiday weekend, 28-31 May. Friday is reserved for Sportsman-only qualifying; all classes qualify on Saturday and Sunday; eliminations are completed on Bank Holiday Monday.
