  • Live your Group B dreams with this 1980 Lancia Rally SE 037 prototype

    The early 1980s Group B era of the World Rally Championship produced some legendary cars, with the Lancia 037 among the most revered. Now a prototype of the championship-winning rally car is scheduled for a RM Sotheby’s auction.

    Conceived as a successor to the Lancia Stratos, the 037 retained that car’s mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The 037 was the last two-wheel-drive car in the WRC, beating the Audi Quattro, the car that introduced all-wheel-drive to the sport.

    Group B regulations were announced in 1979, and 1982 was the latest year that cars from the previous Group 4 rule set would be eligible. That didn’t leave much time to develop a new car, so Lancia started with the Beta Montecarlo Turbo from the Group 5 sports-car category, itself loosely based on the Lancia Montecarlo sports car (badged Scorpion in the United States to avoid clashing with the Chevrolet Monte Carlo).

    This car—chassis SE037-001—was the first prototype. It made its first test runs in 1980, followed by a full testing program throughout 1981. Even after production cars were built and supplied to the rally team, Lancia continued using SE037-001 as a development mule, and it was also used as a reconnaissance or “recce” car at the 1982 Acropolis Rally, according to the listing.

    The 037 won the WRC manufacturer’s championship in 1983, and Lancia built 200 cars to satisfy homologation requirements, but the car’s moment in the spotlight was brief. Audi had shown that all-wheel drive was the future, and the 037 was soon replaced with all-wheel-drive versions of the Lancia Delta hatchback. The 1986 deaths of driver Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto in a Lancia Delta S4 helped bring about the end of Group B, although Lancia continued through the following Group A era.

    Chassis SE037-001 was slated to be scrapped in 1983, but it was saved by its designer, Sergio Limone, who restored the car to its original configuration. It’s now in the hands of a Lancia collector, who is offering the 037 prototype for sale with complete documentation attesting to its authenticity, according to the listing.

  • Bugatti Centodieci, Lamborghini Huracan STO, Ford Bronco Sport: This Week’s Top Photos

    A prototype for Bugatti’s Chiron-based Centodieci was spotted testing at the Nürburgring this week, and we have some video footage. Bugatti will build just 10 examples and the first one will be delivered sometime in 2022.

    Another car spotted at the Nürburgring this week was Lamborghini’s new Huracan STO. Lamborghini was there with a whole pit crew, suggesting that it wants to make an attempt on the lap record for production cars. The time to beat is 6:43.61.

    One of the vehicles we tested this week was Subaru’s new Outback Wilderness. While the rugged wagon was built to be better off-road, many of its changes make it better to drive on pavement as well.

    Another vehicle we tested was Acura’s TLX Type S, which is shipping out to showrooms this month. The handsome sports sedan appeals as a value-priced daily driver with a sporty flair, but it lacks the track chops of European rivals.

    Another Ford in the headlines this week was the battery-electric F-150 Lightning. It’s priced to start from less than $40,000, which isn’t bad considering even the base model will come with 426 hp and an estimated 230 miles of range. Top-end models will have 563 hp on tap.

    Mercedes-Benz showed off the body of its next-generation SL. This time around the AMG skunkworks is developing the SL, with the new convertible to share its new underpinnings with a next-generation GT sports car.

    And finally, German tuner Techart was spotted testing a prototype for its next-generation GT Street R based on the Porsche 911 Turbo. The new super sports car is expected to pack close to 800 hp.

  • 2022 Toyota Tundra, 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, 2021 Acura TLX Type S: The Week In Reverse

    The 2022 Toyota Tundra was teased, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning broke cover, and we drove the 2021 Acura TLX Type S. It’s the Week in Reverse, right here at Motor Authority.

    The 2022 Toyota Tundra was teased, and it looks large. The dark, shadowy image released by Toyota shows a front end with LED lighting and amber marker lights. Either the new Tundra’s going to be really wide—requiring extra marker lights—or the automaker’s making it look tougher than it is with some aftermarket design elements straight from the factory.

    The 2023 BMW 7-Series was spotted again, this time undergoing high-speed testing on the Nürburgring. The flagship luxury sedan prototype didn’t have production-ready lightning, but the headlights appear to be set lower in the bumper than the current model, and we can see lots of cameras for the various driver-assist systems.

    The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning debuted with up to 300 miles of range, 563 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque, four-wheel drive, and lots of smart worksite capability. Production of the electric F-150 Lightning is set to begin next summer, and a work truck version will cost $39,974 before tax incentives.

    Elon Musk tweeted that the first deliveries of the Tesla Model S Plaid models will take place on June 3 at an event at the automaker’s California plant. The Plaid model is said to capable of launching from 0-60 mph in less than 2.0 seconds. Surprisingly, it looks like the first deliveries will arrive ahead of the promised schedule of this fall.

    We drove the 2021 Acura TLX Type S and found it to be an overachiever on the street, but out of its comfort zone on the track at Laguna Seca. While the TLX Type S is a fun, sporty daily driver, it’s slower than and not as well balanced as the German competition. It also costs less than those competitors, and that makes it a value play.
