2021 Maybach S-Class, 2022 Audi Q4 E-Tron, Lamborghini Huracan STO: Car News Headlines

The latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class has spawned its Maybach variant. The extra-posh version comes with 5.5 inches of extra legroom in the back, as well as the option of a two-tone paint finish. There’s only a V-8 at present but we hear a V-12 is coming.

Audi’s upcoming Q4 E-Tron has been spotted again, and the latest prototype has dropped a lot of the camouflage gear of earlier testers. This is Audi’s version of the recently revealed Volkswagen ID.4, and it’s expected to debut with a dual-motor powertrain good for 302 horsepower.

Lamborghini unveiled a new track-focused Huracan. Dubbed the STO, the car is a homologation-style special derived from the Huracan Super Trofeo race car, with reduced weight and improved aero boosting performance rather than an increase in horsepower.

MERCEDES-AMG GT BLACK SERIES NURBURGRING RECORD

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has just beaten the production car lap record around the Nurburgring with a 6:43.616 lap time, some 1.3 seconds faster than the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.

When the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series was unveiled a few months back, we knew the £335,000 monster would offer serious performance for those who can afford it. That assumption has now been confirmed as the car sets the Nurburgring production car lap record with GT3 racer Marco Engel at the wheel. It’s worth noting that the lap record was set without the T13 straight, which is now the norm for manufacturers setting lap times. With the T13 straight included, it completed the lap in 6:48.047.

What is the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series?

Wasn’t the AMG GT R Pro the track car? We thought so too. Apparently not. This car doesn’t feature any GT R badges, instead its an entirely different car based on the regular GT. You’d usually find this bodykit attached to a Mansory kitted car, but this is entirely the work of AMG.

The twin-turbo V8 inside remains the same, except this time its been fitted with a lighter, flat plane crank and breathed on, heavily. It now produces 720bhp and 590lb ft, up 143bhp and 74lb ft over the GT R Pro. Top speed? 202mph. 0-62mph? 3.2 seconds. 0-124mph? Under 9 seconds. Not bad then hey?

Suspension wise it gets competition-spec coilovers but with AMG’s ride control, which is electronically controlled via some dials in the cabin. The GT R Pro does away with this and you have to manually adjust the coilovers. If you do want to get hands on in the pit garage you can adjust front wheel camber and front and rear anti-roll bars.

For this record run, the front splitter was extended to race position, while the spoiler was adjusted to its middle setting. The coilovers were dropped 5mm at the front and 3mm at the rear, while the camber was adjusted to its maximum negative value. The traction control setting was between 6 and 7.

2022 SUBARU BRZ REVEALED

We’ve got our first official peak at the 2022 Subaru BRZ. Sadly it’s not coming to the UK, but does give us a good idea of what to expect when the 2022 Toyota GT86 arrives…

Here it is, the second generation 2022 Subaru BRZ. First thing you’ll want to know is that no, there isn’t a turbo in sight. Instead, power comes from a 2.4-litre, naturally-aspirated engine which produces 228bhp, up from 197bhp in the first generation car, as well as a 15% increase in torque to 184lb ft. Subaru has been able to mount this engine lower than previously, resulting in a lower centre of gravity and hopefully improved dynamics.

Buyers will be pleased to hear that the formula is still the same, a sports car with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual. You can option an automatic, too, as you could on the car that arrived in 2012, but we’d recommend going for the manual.

Subaru is claiming near perfect weight distribution on this second generation car, with the body being slightly longer than on the previous car. It comes in at 1315kg, which makes it around 173bhp-per-tonne. The use of a strut and coil spring set up at the front has helped to reduce weight, too, while a reinforced mounting system has helped improve front lateral bending rigidity by 60% according to Subaru, which in turn aims to improve turn-in and response.

On the outside, the redesign has seen more pronounced front bumpers introduced, alongside larger side vents which all reduce drag. According to Subaru, the air pushed through the larger vents are directed towards the rear deck spoiler, aiding downforce at speed.

Inside, Subaru has spruced up the BRZ with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, utilising Subaru’s latest Starlink system, as well as a 7.9inch digital driver display which features a large rev counter in the middle, but changes when Track model is selected to display a graph-style counter instead.

As mentioned above, the 2022 Subaru BRZ won’t go on sale in the UK; however, the mechanically-identical Toyota GT86 is expected to go on sale here next year, with the BRZ going on sale in the US in late 2021.
