Tesla FSD makes a believer of Xiaomi co-founder after test ride

Xiaomi and Tesla China may have become direct rivals since the launch of the Xiaomi SU7, a challenger to the Tesla Model 3, but the Chinese tech giant’s executives are still supportive of the American EV maker’s innovations. 

This was highlighted recently when Xiaomi co-founder and vice chairman Lin Bin posted a message on Chinese social media praising Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Lin shared his thoughts about Tesla’s advanced driver-assist suite after experiencing FSD (Supervised) V12 in a test ride.

“I just went to the Tesla store to experience FSD V12 autonomous driving. I came out of the parking lot, got on the highway, merged with the vehicle, got off the highway, walked through the city, and finally returned to the parking lot. It took more than ten minutes and covered 10 kilometers. Although there are not many vehicles, there is no need for high-precision maps and no LIDAR. It is completely based on pure visual modeling. I’m very impressed,” the Xiaomi executive wrote. 

In a later comment, Lin also stated that “FSD feels like a human driver” and that he is “looking forward to going for a test drive in a more crowded place.”

The Xiaomi executive is not the only Tesla competitor that has shown excitement for FSD. In recent comments, electric vehicle maker Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng also noted that he is looking forward to the rollout of FSD to China. The Xpeng CEO noted in a post on social media that products like Tesla’s FSD could help usher in the era of smart cars. 

“I especially welcome Tesla FSD to enter China… Tesla has very good self-driving technology and brand. Only when more good products and technologies enter can the entire market and customers have more good experiences, and the market develop and accelerate in a more healthy direction. Moreover, China is now vigorously promoting openness + new quality productivity. I think whether it is Tesla’s FSD, Xpeng’s NGP, or friends’ NOA, these are one of the representatives of new quality productivity and should be supported to let a hundred flowers bloom,” the executive wrote. 

Tesla China has maintained that  “there is currently no timetable for FSD to enter China,” though Elon Musk’s recent visit to the county and a deal between Tesla and internet giant Baidu for mapping and navigation data has triggered speculations that the advanced driver-assist system is about to be rolled out in the country. Tesla also cleared data security and processing requirements in China, as per the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Tesla releases Cybertruck off-road guide book

Tesla’s Cybertruck team definitely seems like they are serious about providing owners of the all-electric pickup truck as much information about their vehicles as possible. This was highlighted by the electric vehicle maker recently as it released a dedicated off-road guide for the Cybertruck. 

A look at Tesla’s Cybertruck off-road guide shows that the document provides a close look at the all-electric pickup truck’s off-road capabilities. It features explainers for the vehicle’s different driving modes, as well as useful tips for off-roading. It even includes information for beginners such as an off-road checklist and a guide for spotting, both of which are quite invaluable. 

A particularly useful portion of Tesla’s Cybertruck off-road guide is its section on vehicle modifications, which emphasizes that physical changes or additions to the vehicle would have effects on some of the truck’s performance or range. This may seem like common sense, but considering the negative range observations from motoring channels like YouTube’s Donut Media, which used a modified Cybertruck for its review, such reminders are evidently needed. 

As noted by Cybertruck Lead Engineer Wes Morrill in a post on X, Tesla put together the Cybertruck off-road guide as a deep dive into all the functionality of the all-electric pickup truck, as well as why and how to use them. Morrill also noted that the guide is intended to make off-roading approachable for drivers who have never really considered it until they got the Cybertruck. 

Such a document would definitely be useful for numerous Cybertruck drivers, especially those who are not well-versed in off-road driving. After all, the Cybertruck seems to be a vehicle that attracts mainstream customers, including those who are only familiar with driving on smooth, paved roads. This could be seen in videos of Cybertrucks getting stuck in snow or other terrain that have gone viral over the past months. 

As per EV watchers, a good number of the viral “cyberstuck” videos that made mainstream headlines were mostly due to driver inexperience. With the Cybertruck off-road guide in place, drivers of the vehicle would hopefully be able to operate the all-electric pickup truck in a more proficient manner.

Tesla short sellers burned for massive losses since Earnings Call

Tesla short sellers are being burned for massive losses since last week’s Earnings Call. Since then, the stock has catapulted over 34 percent.

Tesla shares first exploded last week as the automaker announced it would accelerate its plans for a new vehicle lineup. Despite a miss on earnings, Tesla had a lot of positive elements in its call, which investors seemingly saw as overwhelmingly bullish.

However, the stock continued to shoot upward this morning as Tesla gained approval from China for Full Self-Driving (FSD). Shares are up over 14 percent on the day alone.

While investors are cheering on the prospect of Tesla shares continuing to trend upward, short sellers are not. Skeptics of Tesla and CEO Elon Musk are feeling a substantial burn after the stock surge over the past several days, which has culminated in roughly $5.5 billion in losses.

S3 Partners, an analytics firm, has been tracking the losses of Tesla short sellers since last week’s climb. Today’s surge alone took short sellers for $2.93 billion. It was profitable for the month up until this point, even with last week’s climb.

For the year, short sellers are still up — significantly.

S3 shows that they still have booked over $4 billion in profits as Tesla shares are down around 20 percent for the year.

Tesla is the third-largest short in S3’s database, behind Nvidia and Microsoft. However, other firms, like Hazeltree, have listed Tesla as the most crowded security in its research.
