  • AUDI RS6 GTO CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF QUATTRO

Well, this sort of appeared out of the blue. Say hello to the Audi RS6 GTO. This is the work of 12 third-year apprentices and was built at Audi Sport’s Neckarsulm factory.

We love it when manufacturers put their trust in youngsters. It shows that not only is the future bright for us car enthusiasts, but it also shows that when given the chance, manufacturers can build some outrageous cars that we would absolutely feature if it was built by one of you lot.

This is the Audi RS6 GTO and it was built not only to showcase the talents of Audi’s apprentices, but also to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive technology. Those who’re fans of motorsport will notice that it emanates that of the Audi 90 quattro IMSA-GTO, which was driven by motorsport legends Walter Rohrl and Hans Stuck.

“The RS6 GTO concept of our apprentices has turned out to be an incredibly great car. I am very proud of them and the results of their work,” says Helmut Stettner, Neckarsulm plant manager.

So, what’s different? Mechanically? Not much. Apart from a wheel change, the actual drive from the standard Audi RS6 is no different. Visually, though, it’s very different. Inside, in place of the plush rear passenger bench now resides a roll cage, while the front seats have gone from comfy to not-so-comfy with the addition of Recaro bucket seats and Schroth harnesses and the windows get cargo netting for ultimate motorsport points.

On the outside, as already mentioned, the Audi RS6 GTO gets a new wheel design, as well as side-exit exhausts, because why the hell not?! There’s also that rear wing that comes into play, too, not to mention the livery which points straight towards that Audi 90 mentioned earlier.

Sadly, you can’t buy it and never will either, but that’s not to stop you from creating your own Audi RS6 GTO. And if you do, drop us an email, we’d very much like to see it… Let’s hope that these apprentices can influence Audi’s design language for decades to come.

  • 800BHP HELLCRATE REDEYE ENGINE NOW AVAILABLE

Dodge has unveiled its latest creation available to purchase for engine swaps. This is the 800bhp Hellcrate Redeye engine and is yours for a cool $22,000.

Dubbed the “Hellcrate Redeye” thanks to its placement in the Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye, it differs from the already-available “Hellcrate” from the regular Hellcat by getting a bigger 2.7-litre supercharger instead of the 2.4, which is in turn run at higher boost, as well as receiving forged pistons, conrods and crankshaft. This pushes power to an eyewatering 796bhp and 717lb ft.

But, the new 800bhp Hellcrate Redeye Engine isn’t Mopar’s most powerful engine, that title belongs to behemoth Hellephant crate engine, which delivers a cool 1000bhp and 950lb ft of torque, enough to force the Earth to spin the other way, then… That all comes at a cost though, if you want the more powerful Hellephant crate engine, expect to pay $30,000.

You can also order transmission parts, but that will be extra. As part of that crate, you get the supercharger, throttle body, fuel injectors, coil packs, water pump and a flexplate. So pretty much everything you need for a direct engine swap. You’ll then need to think about a gearbox that can cope with either the 717lb ft in the 800bhp Hellcrate Redeye Engine or the whopping 950lb ft in the Hellephant crate.

Either way, it’s an exciting time for ICE fans as not only has Dodge added to its crate engine lineup, but so has Ford, offering the 760hp, 5.2-litre, supercharged V8 Predator engine from the Shelby GT500 as a crate package.

  • NISSAN RE-LEAF: ASSAULT AND BATTERY

When the apocalypse comes and we’re all scrabbling about through the scorched remains of the Earth, what do you reckon the kingpin survivors will be driving over the skeletons of the fallen?  Land Rover Defenders, Toyota Hiluxes, rugged stuff like that? Nah, they’ll be in electric Japanese hatchbacks.

At least, that’s what Nissan would have us believe. Take a look at this completely excellent creation, the Re-Leaf. As a concept to demonstrate the potential of electric vehicles in disaster recovery.

The engineers have jacked up the suspension by 70mm, fitted a sump guard, widened the track, and bolted on strong motorsport wheels with knobbly tyres under some slick wider arches.

Rescue equipment includes stuff like a 100-watt LED floodlight, an electric jackhammer, a pressure ventilation fan and an intensive-care medical ventilator, and it’s also got a 32in TV in the boot. Let’s just hope there’s still somewhere to charge it after the bomb drops.
