Toyota has confirmed it will reveal the new 4WD, 268bhp GR Corolla this Friday, April 1. But will it be coming to the UK?
Toyota and its Gazoo Racing arm is expanding its model range to the Corolla with the news that the Japanese marque will release an all-new GR Corolla, which will be unveiled this Friday, April 1. And no, it’s not an April Fools joke either!
The new model looks to fill the gap that the GR Yaris didn’t fill when it was kept away from American shores. Sadly for America, Toyota didn’t officially sell the much-loved hot-hatch in the US, and therefore, this GR Corolla looks set to be an American model. Sadly for the UK, though, while we get the GR Yaris, it looks as if we won’t be getting the GR Corolla, with rumours from Toyota UK that it won’t be offered in any European markets.
The hints at an all-American hot hatch are also suggested on the Toyota US website, with it looking to secure interest from future buyers with the following statement:
“GR Yaris dominated the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon, stirring up an outcry in North America over its absence. And it’s easy to see why. A radical hot hatch, GR Yaris is equipped with an all-new 268-horsepower, turbocharged 3-cylinder engine; a rally-derived GR-FOUR All-Wheel Drive system; and a track-proven suspension. It’s the same engineering that helped to make TOYOTA GAZOO Racing a dominant force in the World Rally Championship. While GR Yaris isn’t coming to the U.S., perhaps it’s time the U.S. got a Toyota hot hatch to call its own. One that continues to push the boundaries of performance. And one that can only come from TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. Are you with us?”
While the official reveal happens this Thursday March 31 at 21:30 EDT, 01:30am, April 1 GMT, we do know that the new Toyotal GR Corolla will feature the same powertrain as the GR Yaris. That means it gets a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine sending power to all four wheels via the GR-Four chassis. Expect power to match the Japanese-spec GR Yaris, meaning 268bhp.
Hints from the teaser video above suggests that the GR Corolla will feature a more aerodynamic body over the regular Corolla model, alongisde more aggressive styling and a single-exit exhaust on either side. Expect the new GR hot hatch to take the fight to the Mk8 VW Golf GTI and new Honda Civic Type R, which looks set to be revealed towards the end of 2022 after being teased under camouflage.
We’ll bring you more this Friday following the full reveal. Would you like to see a Toyota GR Corolla brought to the UK market following the success of the GR Yaris? Would you buy one over a Honda Civic Type R?
