  • TURBOCHARGED BMW E9 WITH 1000HP: GO BEYOND

    With a carbon Group 4 wide-body, sequential race gearbox and a 1000hp boosted S38, this incredible turbocharged BMW E9 CSL recreation is a project on a scale that’s hard to comprehend.

    Considering how long PBMW has been around, how many modified BMWs we’ve featured and how many more we’ve seen out in the wild, it takes something truly special to blow our minds, and the E9 you’re looking at is one such car. We can appreciate every build, and we genuinely get excited about all the cars we feature, but occasionally we come across something that’s just on a completely different level, one that mere mortals can never hope to touch, a build that’s almost beyond comprehension in terms of scale and ambition and something that occupies that fantasy, lottery-winning project spot in our minds, which is exactly what this car is.

    Finding a BMW E9 is hard enough: they’re elusive, iconic, not cheap to buy and certainly not a casual purchase nor one that’s easy to look after and care for – if you buy a classic icon like this you’ve got to be committed to it. To take an E9, then, and to turn it into a completely custom CSL race car replica is something truly astonishing and the effort, cost and passion that have been poured into this car are something else.

    Turbocharged BMW E9

    The story of this build is as unique as the car itself and to learn about its creation we must travel to Hungary, to the city of Miskolc, where you will find the headquarters of both drinks manufacturer Hell Energy and Gabura Motorsport. Both Hell Energy and Gabura Motorsport have a long history with cars; Hell’s founders and owners have always been car and motorsport enthusiasts and the company became one of the official sponsors of the AT&T Williams F1 team for the 2009/2010 season. Gabura Motorsport has been working together with Hell for 10 years, and their co-operation has resulted in several stunning show cars. With a passion for cars and being in the fortunate position to be able to indulge that passion, the owners of both companies have never been ones to settle for conventional machinery and have always chosen something unique and different, and this turbocharged BMW E9 is most definitely that.

    Krisztián Gabura, founder and owner of Gabura Motorsport, had the idea for this turbocharged BMW E9 build after he ‘barn-found’ an E9 shell in an abandoned steel factory. The car itself had been used as a personal race car back in its heyday and had often been driven at the Nürburgring. He thought it would be an interesting project to salvage the body and re-build it from scratch, creating something really special in the process, so he shared the idea with the Hell guys who immediately gave him the green light for the project, and the build got under way.

    Of course, that’s easier said than done when you’re attempting to turn a BMW E9 into a Group 4 race recreation and it was an extremely challenging project, as Krisztián explains. “The build required a different way of thinking: full restoration of a classic car to the factory dimensions and to build a custom race car, while (obviously) not disturbing the original shape of the car. Therefore it is difficult to determine what the toughest part of the build was since the whole project and all the details required special attention. In addition to all this, the requirement was to recreate that museum show car quality where every mm counts.”

    The first main problem was that there was no accurate information about the CSL race car available anywhere, so Krisztián drove all the way to the BMW Museum in Munich and, with the permission of the museum management, used a professional 3D scanner tool to take measurements from and digitalise the BMW E9 race car they had on display. With all this data he proceeded to build a 3D model of the E9 on his computer and with that, he could start producing 100% accurate body panels. However, where the original race cars used aluminium body panels, Krisztián chose to produce his panels from carbon fibre, which makes this car all the more awesome. Before any work could begin, however, the entire shell had to undergo an extensive sanding, restoration and reinforcement process to ensure that it was perfect and would also be able to cope with the power that Krisztián was planning to put through it.

    With the shell prepped, assembly of the car could begin and taking a look inside you’ll see that the interior is exactly what you would expect from a race car, with nothing but the best modern motorsport equipment and a healthy helping of custom touches to make it that much more special. The first thing you’ll notice is the full custom Chromoly roll-cage and then you’ll no doubt notice the custom carbon door panels that have been designed to fit around it when the doors are closed, and there are even custom carbon housings in the roll cage for the fluid reservoirs, and that level of attention to detail is simply breathtaking. Carbon features extensively throughout the cabin and it’s everywhere you look: there’s a carbon dash which has been flocked, a carbon centre console, a carbon battery and compressor housing with ventilation, and a custom carbon steering wheel that looks like it’s come straight out of an F1 car. We’re not finished with the carbon yet – the Recaro seats are made from carbon as is the fire extinguisher, and you’ll notice that even the driver’s footplate is made from carbon. This BMW E9 has been equipped with an AP Racing pedal kit, there’s a MoTeC C127 digital display and a Lifeline fire suppression system has been fitted. This is a seriously hardcore race car interior and there have been absolutely no compromises made or corners cut and the end result is simply awesome.

    When it came to the chassis, the same no-compromise approach was taken and a huge amount of work has gone into the setup on this car. All the suspension has been custom-engineered for the track and it uses custom-manufactured parts throughout to achieve the best possible setup, with only the wheel bearings being off-the-shelf items, and that’s incredible. The dampers are custom items from Hadik Suspension, and then there are the motorsport anti-roll bars, custom hubs, alloy and Chromoly control arms, a CNC’d Chromoly front subframe, E92 M3 rack and pinion steering with a TRW Motorsport electric power steering pump, and CNC’d Chromoly bearing housings at the rear along with adjustable camber and toe. The brakes, meanwhile, are suitably massive, with AP Racing GT3 calipers at either end, six-pots up front and four-pots at the rear, with 385mm front and 355mm rear racing discs and Endless brake pads all-round, and this heavy-duty setup ensures that the lightweight E9 stops hard and fast lap after lap. Naturally, a build on this scale requires a suitably spectacular set of wheels – Krisztián has opted for a set of custom HREs and the Vintage Series 501 three-piece cross-spokes are the perfect choice. They’ve got that classic motorsport look that works so well here, especially in their centrelock configuration, and the combo of polished stepped lips and silver centres is timeless. The sizes, however, are far more modern and much larger than you’d expect to see on a car like this, with the E9’s vast arches more than happy to swallow 10x19s up front and 12x19s at the rear, and the wheels are wrapped in seriously wide Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R rubber measuring 265 at the front and 325 at the rear, giving the car exceptional grip and traction out on track.

    If you thought all that was impressive you really haven’t seen anything yet because the centrepiece of the entire build is without the engine and it is insane. A car like this needs a seriously impressive powerplant and the goal here was 1000hp, but the engine couldn’t be too modern so as not to look out of place in a car like this, so an S38B36 was selected due it being that little bit older as well as bulletproof and then it was completely transformed. Displacement has been increased to 3620cc up from 3535cc and it has been equipped with an Arrow forged crank, rods and pistons, ARP studs, there’s a custom-ported head with Supertech Inconel valves, Supertech valve springs and titanium spring plates, a Cometic head gasket, there are Schrick hydraulic lifters with a DLC coating, a Cat Cams 282°cam, but of course what really matters is the turbo and it’s a beast. It’s a BorgWarner EFR 9180, the largest turbo in BW’s EFR range and can be found on numerous turbocharged racing cars, making it the perfect choice for this build. It sits on a custom exhaust manifold that runs to a custom side-exit exhaust, and uses a Tial MV-S water-cooled wastegate, there’s a huge custom front-mount intercooler built by Nagrad and Gabura Motorsport with bolt-on carbon elbows, and normally you’d see a carbon intake manifold with a built-in Tial blow-off valve under the bonnet but it cracked due to the boost pressure and so a new one was designed, built and fitted after the shoot. You’ve also got alloy pulleys, a custom oil pump and custom CNC’d oil pan, a custom radiator and oil cooler by Nagrad, Bosch Motorsport coil packs and twin fuel pumps, DeatschWerks 1200cc injectors, a high-capacity fuel rail, a Fuelab FPR, in the boot you’ll find the ATL 80-litre fuel cell with integrated swirl pot, while a Life Racing F90F ECU manages everything. That’s an incredible array of engine modifications and they mean that this S38 is capable of putting out over 1000hp and 738lb ft of torque, though for race use it’s dialled-back to a mere 818hp and 701lb ft… Either way, with this E9 tipping the scales at just 1320kg, that means a power-to-weight ratio of 758hp/tonne at full power, far beyond that of just about any modern hypercar you can think of, and that means terrifying mind-blowing performance. With that level of performance, the transmission needs to be something pretty serious to be able to cope and it is – the car runs a Gabura five-speed sequential gearbox with a custom forged flywheel and a three-plate carbon clutch, a Life Racing paddle shift system, and a custom propshaft sends power to a Type 210 diff with a custom LSD and custom driveshafts, all of which ensures that all that turbocharged fury gets to the tarmac.

    This E9 is truly an incredible build on a scale that is difficult to comprehend and 14 months were spent putting the car together, which actually seems like a remarkably short amount of time considering how much work has gone into it. Even though we’ve gone into so much detail about this build there’s so much more that has gone into it that it’s simply impossible to cover it all. For example, all the original chrome trims and emblems had to be sourced, and in perfect condition, which is almost impossible when you’re dealing with a car of this age, and the livery that covers that majestic carbon fibre wide-body is actually a freehand airbrushed design that’s covered by nine layers of clear coat. This truly is a money-no-object dream build and we are really happy that there are people like Krisztián and companies like Hell and Gabura out there that have the vision and the means to make a car like this so that the rest of us can enjoy it. This is pure indulgence for anyone who’s a fan of modified performance machinery, the sort of car we’d build if we ever won the lottery and it’s the builds of this incredible magnitude that inspire people, which is why they’re so important and why we’re so happy they exist.

  • BAGGED PORSCHE 964: PORK BELLY

    This prime fillet of Porker is so low-slung, its belly is scraping the ground. But there’s far more to this bagged Porsche 964 than simply a killer stance…

    There’s an old saying among stuffy classic car bores: ‘It’s only original once’. The idea is that an unrestored survivor is worthier than something that deviates in any way from factory standard. Some crusty enthusiasts will tell you that painting your car the ‘wrong’ shade, changing the wheels, or doing anything else to alter the original spec is a big no-no; those even more committed to the nebulous concept of automotive purity will baulk at the idea of repairing dents and scuffs as they tell part of the car’s story, and will be horrified by the idea of using non-standard wiper blades or the incorrect grade of windscreen washer fluid or what-have-you.

    These people, quite frankly, can be safely ignored. We don’t have time for that sort of judgemental nonsense. Your ride, your rules – that’s always been the mantra. The most important person to please is the one holding the keys.

    It’s within this spirit of joyful personalisation that Raj Sangha entered into his bagged Porsche 964 project, although he was always mindful of the brickbats and hard stares that may be earned from the marque aficionados. After all, the Porsche 964 as a model is truly an appreciating classic these days, the values spiralling upward as people who grew up coveting them find themselves in a financial position to make the dream come true. So Raj was keen to tread carefully, to consider the opinions and feelings and passions of other owners and enthusiasts in the community. And after a lengthy period of reflection and contemplation he decided, actually, sod it – he wasn’t ever planning to sell the car, so he’d just do what the hell he liked. And that’s a line of thinking we can very much get on board with.

    Bagged Porsche 964

    Porsche 964 History lesson

    Raj has a long and interesting history of modifying high-end cars in beautiful and intriguing ways, so the direction of this project was always bound to be a positive one. And if you’re scratching your head and trying to figure out which show you might have seen the bagged 964 at over the last few years, the answer is probably, well, all of them. This is owing to the fact that Raj is the boss-man at Car Audio Security – the revered aftermarket outfit which specialises in (obviously) car audio and security products, and also Rotiform wheels and Air Lift suspension. For this reason, the company has a fleet of on-point rides that populate their show stands, and Raj’s passion is intrinsic to all of this. His modifying career stretches back to the early 1990s when he bought an E30 BMW 325i, which he set about respraying Boston Green, trimming the interior in cream leather, and lowering it on Bilsteins over Borbet Cs. He reckons it was probably one of the first E30s to have its bonnet and bootlid properly debadged, and it was details like this that earned it a feature in our sister mag Performance BMW in 1999. Fast-forward through the generations and we see Raj putting together a plethora of aspirational and eye-catching builds; among their number an E92 M3 and an Audi R8, both static over 20-inch Rotiforms, this bagged Porsche 964, a Ferrari F355 F1 on Rotiforms – you may at this point be spotting a logical pattern with the wheel choices – and a bagged M4 with a massive Rockford Fosgate install and, yes, Rotiforms. It then came full-circle with another E30 – this time an M3, because it’s the car he always wanted when he was younger. Not a bad little line-up in the back catalogue, but it’s fair to say that the Porsche has a really special place in the collection, simply for the enormous amount of work that’s gone into it.

    Bagged Porsche 964

    When Raj bought this car – a 1990 911 Carrera 2 – a few years ago, it was a little tired to say the least. Wearing its original and extremely faded Marine Blue paint, the body was in need of no small amount of love and care; not beaten-up as such, but riddled with dings and blemishes, with flat paint and a down-at-heel vibe. He knew that the car deserved a full nut-and-bolt resto, to make it as perfect as it could be, and while the engine was away having a top-end rebuild at a Porsche specialist he put the feelers out to the wider 964 community: what would the general opinion be on changing a 911 of this vintage to a non-standard colour? The responses were mixed, roughly split between people saying ‘Oh no, absolutely not, that’d be sacrilegious’ and others reckoning ‘It’s not the end of the world, but probably best to stick to a proper 964 colour’. This gave Raj plenty of food for thought, and his solution was magnificently cheeky. Having finessed and perfected the shell, it was handed over to the careful hands of revered spraygun-wielder Greg Howell with the orders to shoot it all in Slate Grey. This is such a sly move, because firstly it looks gorgeous, secondly it’s a 964 colour so it’s generally considered ‘acceptable’, but thirdly it’s just wrong enough to really annoy the kind of people who get wound up by this sort of thing. And it’s not just the fact that it isn’t this car’s original paint shade. You see, Slate Grey was available as a special-order colour for the 964 in 1989, and again in 1991-through-’94 – but you couldn’t spec it on a 1990 car. Which, of course, is what Raj’s one is. How naughty is that?

    With the body looking sharp and the running gear all refreshed, the project was sitting in a very strong position. Which meant that it was time to give it the full Car Audio Security treatment – and given that they’re kingpins in the UK distribution of both Air Lift and Rotiform parts, it was inevitable what was going to happen. Starting out on Porsche Cup wheels, it quickly levelled up to a set of Rotiform FUC (that tasty homage to the old-school Fuchs design) before moving on to what it wears today, a delectable and staggered arrangement of custom STR split-rims. These have a classic Porsche aesthetic combined with a thoroughly modern approach to lightweight technology and construction. Not to mention the fact that they look stone-cold badass. The custom air-ride setup allows the 964 to sit astonishingly low when it airs out (look at the side-view shots, the sills are on the floor!), and the install is exactly the sort of aesthetic masterpiece you’d expect from this merry band of artisans. The front boot is crammed with precision-positioned hardlines, with a glimpse at the Rockford Fosgate audio that liberally studs the rest of the interior. And what an interior it is – painstakingly retrimmed in soft black leather with red stitching, it’s a divine 21st-century reimagining of the classic 1990s design. Carbon fibre abounds too, not just in the shells of the seats but also the custom centre console inlays and even the spokes of the MOMO Prototipo steering wheel. It all speaks of an incredible amount of thought, planning and careful decision-making.

    It’s this extraordinary care and attention to detail that really justifies Raj’s choices throughout the build. No, he won’t be winning any concours trophies from the Porsche Owners’ Club, but that’s not what he built it for. This bagged Porsche 964 was created to fulfil the Stuttgart fantasies in his imagination, and that’s precisely what it does. Sure, these things are only original once – but what’s been achieved here represents a whole new definition of ‘original’.

  • MUSTANG GT4 VS MUSTANG GT: RACE VS ROAD

    British teams ran winning Mustangs at the start of the model’s history, 56 years ago. Today, the Mustang GT4 and the road-going Mustang GT are pitched against each other to see just how different they really are.

    It was the British Alan Mann Racing team that delivered the Mustang’s first ever competition victory on the Tour de France Auto, way back in 1964. European Touring Car and British Saloon Car Championship wins followed, starting a competition history that is still being added to today.

    Ford introduced a right-hand-drive version of its latest S550 Mustang to world markets late in 2015, and well over 10,000 examples are now on UK roads. More than 50,000 have been sold across Europe, adding to its title as the world’s best-selling sports car. In its remarkable 56th year of continuous production, racing Mustangs are proving as fierce a foe as ever on the world’s racing circuits, particularly in championships such as British GT and European GT4 racing.

    Mustang GT road cars need to meet different emissions and homologation standards in order to be sold globally; likewise GT race championships have their own sets of rules. The similarity between road and race homologation breaks down at this point; for road use, manufacturers need to accommodate different customs and local regulations for things like lighting and ‘drive-handing’. In the racing world, sanctioning bodies seek to standardise and maximise eligibility across the globe. No such need to accommodate left- and right-hand drive in international motorsport – all Mustang GT4 race cars come in LHD.

    The SRO Motorsports-sanctioned GT championships are run to a ‘balance of performance’ (BoP) formula. Under that BoP, the power, torque, weight and aerodynamic characteristics of each participating model are inspected, measured, analysed and then compared on track by a pair of independent drivers with the aim of getting each car to be capable of lapping within 0.3 seconds of the others on any style of circuit design. It’s a formidable task, which results in a level playing field on which cost escalation is controlled to prevent expensive power wars and ensure exciting, close racing.

    Mustang GT4

    The proof is in the execution, where starting grids are often determined within the same lap time second and where SRO’s performance code is used across the globe. Control points are typically applied using throttle aperture diameter, weight and ride-height to even out overall performance.

    Although the finished products are very different machines, race cars actually started life in the same place as road cars – on the production line at Ford’s Flat Rock assembly facility near Detroit, Michigan.

    After that, the cars went their separate ways; GT road cars were completed at Flat Rock, while Mustang GT4 racers left the Michigan body assembly plant as a fastback ‘body-in-white’ and were shipped to the Multimatic Motorsports facility in Ontario, Canada, to finish their build as a race car. Here they were fitted with race-specification Roush-Yates V8s and various motorsport upgrades.

    To highlight the differences between road and race cars, we grabbed a GT convertible road car (which, today, is about as far away as you can get from the GT4 race cars, even though both cars went down the same production line at about the same time) and compared it to the latest 2020 Mustang GT4 racers from Academy Motorsport.

    Here’s how the two Mustangs compare and contrast…

    Chassis/Body

    All S550 Mustangs start life at the Flat Rock, Michigan assembly plant where, for the first time, left- and right-hand drive variants are built on the same line. Some right-hand-drive variations, such as special springs for our British road surfaces, are ‘post-processed’ away from the production line before shipping to the UK. All British GTs are Performance Pack-equipped with lowered suspension and larger Brembo brakes.

    Just as in the Mustang’s home market, an aftermarket performance and appearance industry has grown in the UK to meet the needs of Mustang owners wanting their car to look and go like the high-performance models that are not available in the UK. Faux-Shelby body stripes are one of the most popular cosmetic additions to UK fastbacks. Tightening up any slack at the suspension is another common mod, which has been previously well documented in Fast Ford magazine.

    The first step for a Mustang GT4 race car, which leaves the Flat Rock assembly plant as a LHD body-in-white fastback, is a visit to a Multimatic subcontractor for seam (stitch) welding and some bulkhead sheet metal modification to accommodate a dry-sump lubrication tank. From there, Multimatic Motorsports takes over the roll cage and systems fit-out at the firm’s base in Markham, Ontario, Canada. Carbon fibre is used extensively for the roof, doors, bonnet and boot lid, along with polycarbonate substitution for the windows. Subsequent ancillary systems can then be added and positioned helpfully, to achieve better weight distribution. The cars have to meet a race regulation minimum weight of 1545kg, which is 113kg lighter than the production Shelby GT350.

    The external aero was designed using lessons learned by the same team on the Le Mans-winning Ford GT racing programme. Bonnet louvres, splitter, canards and rear wing work in concert to define a lightweight, drag-cheating yet effective downforce package that reveals its advantages on the most famous of British GT circuit corners.

    Like most British GT race cars, Academy’s Mustangs are body-wrapped. Academy’s is a distinctive grey and white ‘galloping pony’ Rob Weston design, applied across the team’s transporters and race cars at SRS Automotive.

    Transmission

    Ford reports a roughly 50/50 split of auto versus manual transmissions selected for new Mustangs by UK buyers. Although the autos, which offer a choice of different shifting strategies, are quicker (even more so with a 2018-on ten-speed) many traditionalists still want to feel a mechanical connection through their left palm. The manual gearbox can be a slow shifter and you’d want to be driving a rental example, rather than one you own, to extract maximum acceleration. On many tracks you’ll mostly use third and fourth once under way, so other than being able to respond to shouts of ‘rev it, mate!’ auto converts find it hard to see the point of three-peddling. For those adding forced-induction, there are even more reasons to deliver the additional power through the driveline friendliness of an auto-shifter.

    On the GT4 race car the manual shift is pneumatically assisted, and the straight-cut gears in the Holinger gearbox do not require the use of the clutch once in motion. Flappy paddles are used to control the sequential shift action while compressed air fires like a rifle shot up and down the gears. The chance of missing a gear is minimal.

    Mustang GT4

    Engine

    The Coyote V8 engine was specifically designed for the Mustang GT and was a logical – yet significant – step-change from the previous 4.6-litre V8 engines.

    Having had the muscle car market to itself for the best part of the previous decade, returning to a legendary 5.0 engine size was necessary for Ford to take on new 6.2-litre LS3 Camaros and 6.4-litre Hemi-engined Challengers. Chevrolet and Dodge had stayed in their comfort zones with single-cam, pushrod eight-valvers but Ford pushed the modern and exotic multi-valve V8 configurations still further and adopted Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) with cam torque-actuation across 32 valves. In short, Ford was able to get the same or better power from its cleaner-burning, higher-revving, state-of-the-art engine without having to resort to economy/emissions measures like cylinder deactivation. Here is an engine that sounds and performs like a modern version of America’s preferred cylinder configuration under all conditions.

    The aftermarket industry wasted no time in extracting more power from the Coyote by developing a range of intake, exhaust and forced induction options for those wanting to push 500bhp and beyond. Ford got the GT350 up to 526hp with a naturally-aspirated 5.2 flat-plane-crank Voodoo version of the engine, the championship-winning Ford Shelby GT350R-C version of which forms the basis of the GT4 race car.

    The GT4 engine is a special Roush Yates-built Coyote 5.2-litre derivative designed specifically for the Balance of Performance (BoP) formula, thereby making it eligible for numerous racing series around the world. Although the GT4 uses Voodoo engine cylinder heads that are capable of 8000rpm-plus, this engine runs a cross-plane crankshaft. With a power cap of 450bhp embedded in the BoP GT4 regulations, robust reliability and smooth power delivery is preferred over the peakier power characteristics of the even-higher-revving Voodoo flat-plane crank.

    For many V8 Mustang owners it’s all about the sound and there is no chance of mistaking the GT4 Mustang for a European exotic on track as the iconic V8 rumble comes with the cross-plane cylinder 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2 firing order. Owners of GT road cars seeking an even deeper and more nostalgic sound are prone to fitting H-pipes, sacrificing the obvious advantages provided by the GT4’s X-pipe exhaust configuration for old-school rumble. Race cars utilise the standard factory airbox and filter.

    Suspension

    The introduction of the S550 Mustang in 2015 will be remembered as the moment that doubters could no longer claim Mustangs were only ‘okay for straight lines’, and independent rear suspension finally brought the car’s handling into the 21st century. So dramatic was the change brought about by the new multi-link arrangement that Ford’s chassis engineers had to rework the front suspension to deliver matching ends of sophistication. Even though aftermarket suspension tuning vendors had persuaded the previous solid rear axle to behave, in the end it was only drag racers who lamented the departure of their beloved strong (but antiquated) arrangement.

    All UK Mustang GTs are delivered with the otherwise-optional Performance Pack, which means stiffer, lower suspension. It’s a true grand touring setup that, although perfect for distance cruising, causes many owners to fit even lower, stiffer springs and wheel spacers for appearance and performance reasons.

    The suspension can also be sharpened with a variety of aftermarket bolt-on parts, which tighten up the slack and make for a more consistent driving experience. A front strut brace is a popular addition, so too is chassis bracing, especially to that new IRS rear end. The convertible model has plenty of additional bracing and is much stiffer than any previous generations of soft-top Mustangs, while MagneRide is an option on all post-2018 cars, with electronically-controlled automatic variable damping.

    Competition car development is an area where Multimatic excels; the team’s in-house expertise in vehicle dynamics, simulation, composite materials and niche vehicle development is race-proven. If there is a ‘secret sauce’ in GT4 Mustangs it’s in the all-round Multimatic adjustable cartridge-type dampers with DSSV spool-valve damping technology. DSSV shocks helped to win five Champ Car championships, four Formula 1 world championships, and are standard fit on a long list of high-performance cars like the Ford GT, Aston Martin One, Mercedes-AMG GT, Ferrari 458/488 GT3 and GT3LM. They are also the spec damper for numerous racing series such as DTM and were used by over half of Le Mans 24 Hours entries. Whereas conventional shock absorbers rely on flexible disc shims, DSSV technology is characterized by the use of spool valves and an external fluid reservoir. Disc shims have a reputation for unpredictability and can be inconsistent under the stress of racing. Multimatic’s product gains its popularity from the precision, predictability, repeatability and robust performance that transforms the Mustang’s handling on-track.

    Up front, the adjustable coil-over MacPherson struts have race-specific bushings and ball joints. The rear multi-link IRS has Multimatic-designed lower control arms, race-specific bushings, ball joints, and of course, Multimatic DSSV adjustable shock absorbers. Blade-adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars complete the sophisticated suspension package.

    Wheels & Tyres

    Road-going GTs come with staggered 19in alloys, 9in at the front and 9.5in at the rear.  Pirelli P Zeros were factory fit and troublesome for some owners making the switch from front-wheel-drive and using the Mustang as a daily driver in winter; well-known as a summer tyre that is at its best above 7°C, some owners struggled with traction on colder days. From 2018-on the more forgiving Michelin Pilot Sport 4S OEM fitment has gained a loyal following. Alternative tyre brands, like Altimax One S from Continental’s General Tire, which has a long association with Saleen performance Mustangs, are beginning to be available in standard Mustang sizes in Europe.

    British GT teams employ integrated air jack systems and are well-practised at changing all four wheels mid-race during endurance events. Forgeline 11x18in forged multi-spoke alloy wheels are specified across the field for GT4 racing and will clear the 380mm floating front discs. Pirelli has been the official tyre supplier to the British GT Championship since 2016 with P Zero-branded tyres. For the 2020 season the Pirelli P Zero DHB replaces last season’s DH slicks, and the Cinturato WH is retained for wet use.

    Brakes

    All UK GT Mustangs are equipped with 380mm front discs and six-pot Brembo brakes, which are plenty for spirited road and occasional track use. The rear stoppers are standard Ford parts, which can be relaxed if the standard-fit line-lock feature is deployed. The race car gets Brembo six-piston front and four-pot rear callipers with fully-floating, slotted discs.

    Keen followers of the British GT Championship in 2019 witnessed how Scott Maxwell and Seb Priaulx were able to use the Mustang’s braking prowess with devastating effect to outlast and out-brake their opponents when maximum braking was required at circuits like Oulton and Donington Park. As the race car’s brakes are not power-assisted, the drivers can finesse their corner approach to their advantage under braking. There is a Bosch race-tuned ABS and TC system in the mix, but in dry conditions they are set to intervene only at the very highest levels of traction torture. YouTube videos of Seb Praiulx at last year’s Donington season finale provide plenty of evidence of him combining his skill with the car’s capability for maximum advantage.

    Tuning the road Mustang GT

    With both the road version of the S550 and the latest Mustang GT4 racer sat side-by-side, it’s easy to highlight the quite significant differences between the two, especially as far as handling is concerned. The two are very different machines at opposite ends of the scale; one is built to cruise around in comfort and style, and the other developed to be as fast as possible on the race track. But what, if like many Mustang owners, you want to nudge your road car’s performance levels more towards those of the race car, but without compromising its abilities as a road car?     Conclusion: Mustang GT4 vs GT

    Both the Mustang GT4 and the road-going GT are world-class products and price-point leaders for their respective use cases. The difference is that a road-going Mustang is just a starting point for many owners who will go on to modify and upgrade their V8 steed. For GT4 drivers, the car comes fully race-ready with no further mods required or permitted – it’s their skill, racecraft and team’s preparation that will carry them to British and European GT Championship race victories.
